Born in 1958 in Friedrichshafen, he studied violin with Igor Ozim and Ramy Shevelov in Köln, Hannover, and New York, as well as conducting with Michael Gielen and Peter Eötvös.
From 1984 to 1996 he played the violin as a member of Ensemble Modern. In 1987 he made his debut as a conductor and appears regularly with Ensembles like ensemble recherche, Ensemble Modern, Ensemble intercontemporain Paris, as well as with all big German Orchestras (Bavarian Radio Symphony Ochestra, German Symphony Orchestra, the Radio Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, etc.). Since January 2005 he is the musical director of the Remix Ensemble Porto. He has also directed opera productions at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Bayrische Staatsoper, at the Wiener Festwochen and the Bregenzer Festspiele.
On KAIROS he is represented with works for ensembles and orchestra by Hanspeter Kyburz and Claude Vivier.
