GÉRARD GRISEY (1946-1998) Born in Belfort. Between 1963 and 1965 he studied at the Staatliche musikhochschule trossingen (Germany) and entered the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris. From 1968 to 1972 he studied with Olivier Messiaen. At the same time he studied with Henri Dutilleux at the Ecole Normale de musique (1968) and attended the summer courses of the Accademia Chigiana in Sienna (1969) and the Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt with Ligeti, Stockhausen, and Xenakis in 1972. As recipient of the Villa Medici scholarship in Rome (1972-74), Grisey founded the group L'Ilinéraire in 1973 together with Tristan Murail, Roger Tessier, and Michael Levinas, while Hugues Dufourt joined their ranks later on. It is during these years that he composed Dérives, Périodes, and Partiels, co-founding spectral music. Starting 1974/75, Grisey studied acoustics with Emile Leipp at the Universität Paris VI. From 1982 to 1986 he taught music theory and composition at the University of California in Berkeley. Starting 1987 he taught comopsition at the Paris Conservatory and conducted numerous composition seminars in France (Centre Acanthes, Lyon, Paris), Germany (Darmstadt, Freiburg), and in many other countries (Milan, Oslo, Helsinki, Malmö, Los Angeles, Stanford, London, Moscow, Madrid, ...). He died 1998 in Paris. Aus dieser Zeit stammen auch die Stücke Dérives, Périodes und Partiels, die die Spektralmusik mitbegründeten. Ab 1974/75 studierte Grisey Akustik bei Emile Leipp an der Universität Paris VI. 1982-86 unterrichtete er Musiktheorie und Komposition an der University of California in Berkley. Ab 1987 unterrichtete er Komposition am Pariser Konservatorium und leitete zahlreiche Kompositionsseminare in Frankreich (Centre Acanthes, Lyon, Paris), Deutschland (Darmstadt, Freiburg) und in vielen anderen Ländern (Mailand, Oslo, Helsinki, Malmö, Los Angeles, Stanford, London, Moskau, Madrid, ...).
