Brian Ferneyhough was born in Coventry, England on 16 January 1943. He received formal musical training at the Birmingham School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, London. In 1968 he was awarded the Mendelssohn Scholarship, which enabled him to continue his studies in
Amsterdam with Ton de Leeuw, and the following year obtained a scholarship to study with Klaus Huber at the Basel Conservatoire.
Following Ferneyhough’s move to mainland Europe, his music began to receive much wider recognition. The Gaudeamus Composers’ Competition in Holland awarded Ferneyhough prizes in three successive years (1968–70) for his Sonatas for String Quartet, Epicycle and Missa Brevis respectively. The Italian section of the ISCM at its 1972 competition gave Ferneyhough an honorable mention (second place) for Firecycle Beta and two years later a special prize for Time and Motion Study III which was considered the best work submitted in all categories.
Ferneyhough has taught composition at the Musikhochschule in Freiburg, the Civica Scuola di Musica, Milan, the Royal Conservatoire of The Hague and the University of California, San Diego. In January 2000 Ferneyhough joined the faculty at Stanford University and was named William H. Bonsall Professor in Music there shortly afterwards. Students from all over the world have benefited from his classes at, among others, the biennial Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt and at the Fondation Royaumont near Paris. In 2007–2008, Ferneyhough was appointed Visiting Professor at the Harvard University Department of Music.
Ferneyhough’s music has been performed throughout the world and has been featured at all the major European festivals of contemporary music.
Brian Ferneyhough’s first opera, Shadowtime, was premièred in May 2004 at the Munich Biennale to great acclaim. Based on the life and work of Walter Benjamin, Shadowtime explores some of the major themes of Benjamin’s work, including the nature of language, the possibilities for a tranformational leftist politics, and the role of materiality in art. A CD of Shadowtime was released by NMC records in 2006.
Recent work has included a Fifth String Quartet, written for the Arditti String Quartet and premièred in Witten in 2005. A new orchestral piece, Plötzlichkeit, was premièred at the Donaueschingen music festival in October 2006, and taken up by the Zürich Tonhalle Orchester in 2007. Chronos Aion was premièred by the Ensemble Modern in 2008.
In 2007 he has been awarded with one of the most prestigious prizes, the Ernst von Siemens Music Prize.

Ferneyhough erteilte Kompositionsunterricht an der Musikhochschule Freiburg, an der Civica Scuola di Musica in Mailand, am Königlichen Konservatorium Den Haag und an der University of California in San Diego. Im Januar 2000 trat Ferneyhough der Fakultät an der Stanford Universität bei und wurde kurz darauf zum William H. Bonsall Professor für Musik ernannt. Studenten aus aller Welt haben von seinem Unterricht profitiert, unter anderem im Rahmen der zweijährigen Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt und an der Fondation Royaumont nahe Paris. Im Jahr 2007-2008 wurde Ferneyhough zum Gastprofessor an der musikalischen Fakultät der Harvard Universität ernannt.
Die Musik Ferneyhoughs ist in allen Teilen der Welt aufgeführt worden, und er war bereits auf allen bedeutenden europäischen Festivals für zeitgenössische Musik vertreten.
Die Premiere Brian Ferneyhoughs erster Oper Shadowtime fand im Mai 2004 bei der Münchner Biennale unter großem Beifall statt. Shadowtime basiert auf dem Leben und Schaffen des Walter Benjamin und erforscht die wichtigsten Themen Benjamins Werks, unter anderem das Wesen der Sprache, die Möglichkeiten einer transformierenden linken Politik und die Rolle der Dinglichkeit in der Kunst.
Zu den jüngsten Werken zählt ein Fünftes Streicherquartett welches für das Arditti String Quartet geschrieben wurde und 2005 in Witten erstmals aufgeführt wurde. Die Premiere eines neuen Orchesterstücks, Plötzlichkeit, fand im Oktober 2006 im Rahmen des Donaueschingen Musikfestivals statt und wurde 2007 ins Repertoire des Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich aufgenommen. Chronos Aion wurde erstmals 2008 vom Ensemble Modern aufgeführt.
Im Jahr 2007 erhielt Ferneyhough einen der bedeutendsten Musikpreise, den Ernst von Siemens Musikpreis.
