"CONCERTO" - Dithyrambe for String Quartet and Orchestra consciously does without the classic concerto-form. Instead of a dialogue between the string quartet and the orchestra, possibly even over the same theme, what we have here is a positively manic monologue. It is held by "a creature with four mouths-yes, with four heads and four mouths, a beast!"

"I wanted to write a sister-work for the one that already existed," says Rihm. "Or a brother-work? Sotto voce is a slow, relatively quiet piece. Sotto voce 2 is something like an answer to it - another answer, so to speak, a fast movement, a motionfilled piece that whispers. It has to do with motion sequences and with velocity." „CONCERTO“ – Dithyrambe für Streichquartett und Orchester, verzichtet bewusst auf die klassische Concerto-Form. Statt eines Dialoges zwischen dem Streichquartett und dem Orchester, womöglich über dasselbe Thema, handelt es sich hier vielmehr um einen schier manischen Monolog. Diesen führt „ein Wesen mit vier Mündern – ja, vier Köpfe und vier Münder, ein Biest!“

„Ich wollte gerne ein Schwesterwerk zu dem schon bestehenden schreiben“, sagt Rihm. „Oder ein Bruderwerk? Sotto voce ist ein langsames, relativ stilles Stück. Sotto voce 2 ist gleichsam eine Antwort darauf – eine andere Antwort sozusagen, nämlich ein schneller Satz, ein bewegtes Stück, das flüstert. Es hat mit Bewegungsabläufen zu tun und mit Geschwindigkeit.“
