The name Manoury is closely associated with IRCAM, the Parisian research institute at which the composer devised the cycle Sonus ex machina over a period of seven years (1987–94): in this work, solo instruments (one flute, one midi piano, one drum and one voice) interact with computer programmes using realtime sound simulation. This system is revisited in the Partita I for viola heard on the present recording. The period since Sonus ex machina has seen Manoury’s interest shift toward the opera, and in 2004 he also began teaching composition at the University of San Diego in California.

Der Name Manoury ist eng mit dem Ircam verbunden, dem Pariser Forschungsinstitut, an dem der Komponist im Laufe von sieben Jahren (1987-94) den Zyklus Sonus ex machina erarbeitet hatte: Mit Hilfe von Klangsimulation in Echtzeit interagiert jeweils ein Solo-Instrument (Flöte, Midi-Klavier, Schlagzeug, Stimme) mit Computerprogrammen, ein System, das die hier eingespielte Partita für Bratsche wieder aufnimmt. Inzwischen hat Manoury sich der Oper zugewandt, und unterrichtet seit 2004 Komposition an der Universität von San Diego, California. (Martin Kaltenecker)
